What happens when you go to the Rivera Motor Inn on the west side of Saskatoon for a photoshoot? You have to assure the manager that you are in fact not shooting an amateur porn all while asking the hourly rate of the motel, stating it is merely a glitter-esk photoshoot. Once we paid the hourly rate and put the $100 dollar deposit down (deposit to ensure that we do not stain the bed sheets more than they already were or that we would not further peel the beige wallpaper?) we headed to the room. After doing hair/makeup and putting our first outfits on we all lay on the bed (hoping not to contract any diseases) together for the first photos; the bed happened to be facing the window, where a view of the Co-op hardware store could be seen across the desolate back alley. Posing on the bed passers by had a clear view of three girls laying salaciously ...a questionable scene as the photographer and videographer were hidden in the corners of the room. Looking out the window we saw strange men meandering past the back door, yes the back door of our motel room, in leather trench coats heading to rooms a couple of doors down. Drugs? Sex? Who knows. Next we had to douse ourselves in glitter...after literally gluing glitter onto our bodies for ten minutes the motel room started to look a little less dingy. It cast a nice sparkly touch across the various stains and shades of beige in the room.
In honour of my newfound appreciation of simple pieces of jewellery, I thought, "What's better to pair with a run down motel room and glitter?" Jewels, of course. Tori & Taz are the blonde duo behind Tori & Taz Jewellery. Based out of New York, the brand offers simple, classic pieces featuring natural gemstones. I love jewellery that you can wear every day, and that is what I've been doing with these pieces. Having the ability to subtly layer simple necklaces under tee shirts or you know, glitter on your chest and a cigarette hanging from your mouth. But in all realness I can think of a million ways to wear these pieces. Simple pieces of jewellery will be your best friend, they will accompany you to that wedding you're so unsure of what to wear, they will be that little glisten of hope out of your peripheral when you're having a bad day (or maybe just a bad hair day), and they will be there (hopefully) after that drunk escapade to McDonalds the previous night to make you feel even the slightest bit prettier as your eyelashes are scattered on your cheeks and you've found fries laying next to you under the covers. Tori grew up in Regina, a city about 3 hours south of where I live; I thought it was great to learn about another success story involving someone originating from Saskatchewan. Her partner in crime, Taz, was born and raised in South Africa, so the two have an interesting mix of taste and culture to create rad things...definitely check out their pieces. My personal favorites of the collection are seen in the photos below...more outfit photos to come showing how to wear simple accountrements daily.
Back to the ladies featured in the photos...
Olivia is taking Environmental Science at the University of Saskatchewan (so awesome!) and we came to know each other through our job as servers. She is one of the kindest/cutest humans I've met and the girl can dance! TEACH ME.
Sarah is a fine arts student in her 3rd year at the U of S. She creates images of everything from beautiful landscapes to abstract portraits interpreted differently by every viewer. She is a model, and why wouldn't you be with those amazing cheek bones?
Suzy Bourque, the photographer, asked if I wanted to do a glitter themed shoot and the only place we could think of that would be ok to get glitter everywhere was a grimy motel. So, I thought I would drag along two of the coolest girls I work with.
Here's a little bit about Olivia...
1. Who is your favorite Kardashian/Jenner?
Kendall Jenner; she seems the most natural and normal so far of all the Jenner's/Kardashians.
2. Mani or Pedi?
Pedi, pedi, pedi! I'm a server and anything that makes my feet feel better is always the first choice for me!
3. Favorite drunk snack?
Samosas, the best at 2 am are from a little diner down town.
4. Your ideal boyfriends closet would be Fashion Santa, Fetty Wap or Shia Labeouf?
Fashion Santa all the way! Anything to do with Christmas and fashion is good in my books. Or Shia Lebeouf's pre-crazy fashion; is that a choice?
5. What's next for you?
I plan to finish university and travel the world. I love learning about different cultures and languages.
