Adult acne is one of those things that makes you think about how being an adult doesn't actually make things 'better', how when you were 15 and yearned to be 25 you didn't realize you would still have acne but on a grander scale and also be paying taxes, rent, your phone bill and your own bedazzled mom jeans. I had moderate acne throughout high school. I remember taking trips to the local drugstore with my friends to try to find new products that would work for us. In grade 9 we went on a voyageur canoe trip. I packed everything I thought necessary...M&M trail mix, a change of clothes, a water bottle, and my 'Oxy Acne Pads'. The first night we set up camp a couple girls and I were going to freshen up before bed. I exclaimed to my friend that we didn't need water because I brought my new acne pads that we just wipe our face with. I handed one to her and the next thing I knew she was screaming in agony because her face was burning so badly. "Is it suppose to burn like this?!" she said. I pointed to the pad and said, "Yes! Look at the pad you can see all of the dirt coming out of your pores!" The Oxy pads actually didn't help, they were painful, contained so many different chemicals and probably actually worsened our skins current state. My acne stayed with me throughout the remainder of high school and it actually went down hill in my early 20's. At 23 my doctor finally agreed it was bad enough that I could take a course of Accutane. With only four days left of my treatment it has helped me move from caking on liquid foundation over my bumpy cheeks, to only needing a little bit of powder. I'm just praying that the results will be permanent and within a month or so of being off the drug I won't start seeing breakouts again. My plan is to continue my very strict skin routine; only using completely natural products.
When I visited the mountains a few weeks ago I was introduced to Rocky Mountain Soap Company. They offer completely natural skin care products with only ten ingredients or less in each product--they're simple, straightforward and organic. You know exactly what you're putting on your face/the rest of your body. While I was visiting the mountains, I tested some of their products and became hooked.
Some of my favourite products by Rocky Mountain Soap Co. :
1. Smoothing Face Polish
I use this scrub once or twice a week to slough off dead skin cells and underlying grime. I blend it with water, but I think I may try with coconut oil this week; it is your choice what you blend it with! It completely changed the texture of my skin--making it more even and soft...and smooth.
2. Transformative Cleansing Oil
I use this oil after cleansing; using a cotton pad I wipe excess makeup and dirt that my cleanser was unable to remove. The oil nourishes and dissolves any remanence clogging your pores. I then spray my face with the calming toner!
3. Calming Toner
I keep this in my purse at all times. I even use it with my makeup on. It will unclog your pores and give you dewy, glowing skin. It comes in handy at work when I find I am running around and sweaty.
4. Body Butter Bar
I didn't even know products like this existed. This became one of my all time favourites. I use this bar when I hop out of the shower; I love that it doesn't get on my hands because my routine usually starts with moisturizing my body before my face. In bar form, no moisturizer is left behind on your hands! It's also a perfect 'pre shift' solution to dry legs.
5. Bar Soap
I've switched my routine from liquid to bar soap. Yes it reminds me of my childhood, and my dads Dove soap, but raw bar soap is not only better for the environment (no excess packaging!) but it also is unpreserved and lasts longer! They also have so many yummy flavours to choose from.
