Living in a small city can be hard if a person is into any arts related field. Finding people who share an interest in fashion, blogging, photography, even a passion for food can be difficult (if I had someone to go to The Hollows with for brunch every Sunday I'd be even more of a regular than I am). When a person does find people who share similar interests it is important to foster relationships, share ideas and learn from one another. Luckily, Saskatoon has a fairly well established 'community' (it's been dubbed the 'Paris of the Prairies'). When I stumbled across Ashley Kilback's blog, Closet Space, I scrolled through not having any idea where she was from. I was impressed by her sartorial choices in both writing and outfitting and eventually realized she was from Regina! We connected and ended up doing a shoot together.
The concept of the shoot was to wear the same trousers in a different color and show up with no idea how the other person would style them. We ended up looking completely opposite--I went for a laid back easy going look, while Ashley looked chic in metallics and a flamingo necklace (I was tempted to steal - see the last picture, 'Hey girl, imma creep on you and that pretty lil flamingo necklace of yours').
What I learned about Ashley over the course of this short meeting was that she is extremely kind and that she has larger than life personality. Let's get to know her....
1. Eyeliner or lipstick?
Tough call, I feel naked without both of them - but I'm gonna have to go with lipstick. I probably have more lipstick than anything else in my purse right now, so if lipstick hoarding is a thing, I'm guilty of it.
2. You dress yourself so well for being a petite woman, is there any styling advice you can give the shorter ladies out there?
High waisted pants with a wide leg are a gift of the fashion gods. They're perfect for elongating the body to create the illusion that you're way taller than you actually are. Four inch heels disguised under the pant work wonders too. (Laughs)
3. Sorry for the double whammy here, what do you splurge on?.....and what's your next must-have?
My splurging habits go through phases, I'm on a bit of a shoe craze lately so my latest splurge would have to be my newest pair of Jeffrey Campbell's. I'm dying to own a pastel colored pant suit right now, so I think that will definitely be my next purchase for spring.
4. Why did you start Closet Space and where do you see it taking you within the next 5 years?
I've always loved fashion and I was in search of a creative outlet to express it, so I decided to start writing about it and everything kind of just came together from there. I love storytelling with fashion, it's allows me to have fun with something I'm serious about. I have an entrepreneurial fire within me, so I want to make it into my own business within the next 5 years, right now I'm really just focused on growth. I want to keep writing and building towards that end goal.
5. Your ideal Boyfriend's Closet would be: Sean Connery, Johnny Depp or Jay Z?
Jay Z, whether he's dressing up or down, his style has got an edge to it and I like that.
