This is probably a new record for me, but I haven't checked Instagram in over 8 hours(!!!!!)--what a sad sentence. As I finished typing guess what I did? Picked up my phone, damnit! This type of engagement is the reason Instagram has become an important tool for bloggers, companies and retailers. It is an outlet to present their image and brand to thousands or even millions of followers who check for updates frequently. With all of this power to curate an image, it is important to post content that will have followers coming for more. For example, people who follow me on Instagram are probably expecting information about the latest post or an outfit photo, not a pictureofmy friend and I wearing a mop head as hair. What is the recipe for the perfect Instagram account? It really depends what you are representing, but when I scroll through a users profile I am intrigued by an account that follows this formula:
A few more tips:
1) Make sure you get the right crop - some photos look better horizontal than vertical. I like using 'square ready' or 'whiteagram' to create the white borders around the photos and allow the entire photo to be viewed either vertically or horizontally.
2) Make sure your photos are straight and use the proper lighting or filters to bring out the colors and details. I usually don't put a filter on my photos, but rather use the editing tools of the apps mentioned above--changing the contrast and temperature can go a long way.
3) Make sure the background is on point (be it printed, white fur, sky, or the floor) to allow the subject to be the focal point of the image--I usually go for neutral backdrops.
4) AND always remember to caption the photo; I have a problem with an over-use of emojis. I am always a fan of a play on words or something simple to explain the photo.
Can you think of any other stand-out pictures from those perfect Instagram accounts that I'm missing?
